Raw shea butter: why it doesn't need to be processed to be effective
Share
Shea butter is now found in a large majority of cosmetic products. However, in most cases, it is processed, refined, mixed with other ingredients.
At Karita, we have made a different choice: to offer raw, unrefined shea butter, true to its original use.
Because shea does not need to be processed to be effective.
What is raw shea butter?
Raw shea butter is a vegetable fat extracted from the nut of the shea tree, an emblematic tree of West Africa. Unlike refined shea, it undergoes no industrial transformation, no chemical treatment, no deodorization.
It thus retains all of its essential fatty acids and its natural vitamins A, E and F, recognized for their nourishing, repairing and protective properties.
Raw shea is distinguished by:
- a rich and dense texture
- a natural beige to ivory color
- an authentic plant smell
- These characteristics are not defects. They are proof of a living and intact product.
Raw shea vs. refined shea: what are the differences?
Refined shea butter is often used by the cosmetic industry to meet production constraints: neutral odor, uniform texture, better long-term stability.
But this refining process eliminates some of the natural active ingredients of shea.
Conversely, raw shea butter acts directly on the skin because it respects its natural composition. It penetrates gradually, deeply nourishes and supports the skin barrier without damaging it.
At Karita, we believe that skin recognizes what is simple, pure and unmodified.
The benefits of raw shea butter on the skin
Raw shea butter is a natural multi-purpose treatment known for its many benefits:
- Intense hydration: it deeply nourishes the skin and limits dehydration
- Skin repair: it helps repair dry, damaged or irritated areas
- Soothing: it calms sensitive, reactive or weakened skin
- Natural protection: it forms a protective film against cold, wind and external aggressions
Used regularly, raw shea butter visibly improves skin comfort and suppleness.
A simple treatment, suitable for the whole family
One of the great advantages of raw shea butter is its versatility.
It can be used on:
- the face
- the body
- hands and feet
- lips
- dry or curly hair
- baby skin
A single product is enough to meet many needs, without multiplying bottles.
Why Karita chose raw shea butter
At Karita, we observed that shea butter is often present in cosmetics, but rarely highlighted in its purest form.
We therefore chose to offer a simple, raw, ready-to-use shea butter, through a short supply chain.
Our shea butter comes from fruits hand-picked in Burkina Faso, then traditionally processed by women's cooperatives. This choice guarantees:
- consistent quality
- clear traceability
- a positive human impact
Less transformation, more meaning
Raw shea butter embodies another vision of cosmetics:
fewer promises, fewer ingredients, less transformation — but more real effectiveness.
Choosing raw shea butter means choosing:
- transparency
- simplicity
- quality over quantity
At Karita, we believe that returning to basics is sometimes the strongest gesture.
